Mineral-only Sunscreen Dispenser Installed at Hulopoʻe Bay
The Maui Visitors and Convention Bureau (MVCB) has partnered with Raw Elements and Pūlama Lānaʻi to provide a mineral-only sunscreen dispenser at Hulopoʻe Bay on the island of Lānaʻi. Raw Elements is an FDA-approved, non-GMO verified and cruelty-free certified brand. They create SPF products with certified organic ingredients. In support of regenerative tourism in protection of our natural resources, this dispenser is available for free public use, benefitting kamaʻāina (residents), malihini (visitors) and kai (ocean) ecosystems. The dispenser is located on the public bathroom at Hulopoʻe Bay, adjacent to the water refilling station.
This initiative supports the unanimous Maui County Council Ordinance outlawing all chemicals from sunscreens, which went into effect on October 1, 2022. Through DMAP funds provided by the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority, the Maui Visitors Bureau is providing the sunscreen to refill this dispenser, which Pūlama Lānaʻi maintains. "Weʻre very grateful for Pūlama Lānaʻiʻs partnership and for the DMAP funds to support this amenity we can provide to residents and visitor alike in support of human and coral reef health."
“By providing these resources in our community, we encourage our visitors and kamaʻāina to utilize them and make a conscious decision to mālama the environment,” said Michelle McLinden Nuijen, Maui County Environmental Program Specialist.
MVCB and Raw Elementsʻ partnership in providing mineral sunscreen dispensers meets key Lānaʻi DMAP goals, including:
